Melanie Elizabeth Sheikh Obituary

Melanie Elizabeth (Anderson) Sheikh, age 64 Cole Harbour Nova Scotia passed away peacefully on December 28, 2025 after a courageous three-year battle with pancreatic cancer, surrounded by her loving family, Daughter of the late Theodor (Teddy) and Shirley Anderson. Melanie grew up in East Petpeswick Road, Musquodoboit Harbour, Nova Scotia, Melanie lived her life with quiet strength, deep compassion, and unwavering devotion to her family.


She is survived by her beloved husband of 45 years, Azer “Jimmy” Sheikh, with whom she built a life grounded in love, resilience, and strong family values. Melanie was a devoted mother to her three sons, Zishan, Kashif, and Sheraz, and to Peter Toulany, who is loved as a son and remained a constant presence through both good times and difficult ones, and a cherished mother-in-law to Elyse Sheikh. Her greatest joy came from her grandchildren, Kaleb, Kaden, and Aria, and she eagerly awaited the arrival of her precious granddaughter soon to be born.


Melanie is lovingly remembered by her sisters, Heather Macdonald and Valerie Terrio, and a large extended family she held very close, including Billy and Kim Sheikh, Shagufta and Khalid Chaudhry, Javed and Tabinda Sheikh, Nargis and Sajid Khan, Shakeela Chaudhery, Shella Munir, ( all of Halifax) and the late Zahida and Ashraf Khan.( UK) She was a treasured aunt to 20 nieces and nephews and 23 great nieces and great nephews, all of whom adored her as “Aunt Mel.” To them, she was laughter, warmth, fun and joy, always the first to dance and light up a room……. Everyone would say well guess the party is on!


Known for her infectious smile, fun-loving spirit, and respectful, welcoming demeanour, Melanie made everyone feel comfortable and at home. She was an incredible cook and a perfect host, creating spaces filled with warmth, laughter, and unforgettable meals. She also had a natural eye for design and a love for renovating She was often seen with her husband, painting, building, and transforming homes for family and friends with care and creativity.


A deeply down-to-earth woman, Melanie found happiness in life’s simplest moments such as time with family, music, sitting by a fire, and cooking alongside her beloved husband. She never sought attention, yet her presence was grounding and powerful. She was, and will always be, the heart of her family.


Melanie worked at Shoppers Drug Mart for over 40 years, where she formed lasting friendships with colleagues and customers alike. It was there that she met Debbie, who became her best friend and remained so throughout her life.

Melanie was remembered for her kindness, dedication, hard work, unquestionable integrity, and genuine care for customers.


The family extends heartfelt thanks to her oncologist, Dr Morgan and chemotherapy nurses who stood by her through her many chemo treatments, the doctors and nursing staff on the VG Hospital thoracic floor 6B, her devoted family physician Dr. Figueroa, and the many friends and relatives whose visits brought comfort and joy during her final weeks.


Though Melanie’s physical presence is gone, her spirit, love, and values live on in all who were blessed to know her. She will be profoundly missed and forever remembered.

Arrangements were entrusted to T.J. Cremation and Burial Specialists.


A celebration of life will be held in the Sackawa Canoe Club, 159 First Lake Drive, Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia, B4C 3J9, on January 17, 2026 from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm.


This will be a relaxed and welcoming gathering, maybe even a bit of dancing , just as Melanie would have wanted. A time to remember her stories, her kindness, her infectious smile, and the joy she brought into every room and lives of many people.


Your presence would mean a great deal to our family as we come together to remember and celebrate a woman who was truly the heart of our family.
