Sue was such a beautiful soul. She and I met at King's College in the fall of 1987, and became close friends. I will never forget how she meticulously typed up her term papers (while eating sunflower seeds) and how much joy we shared learning about Chaucer from Anne Higgins and British Poetry from Professor Fraser. She was so bright and always had the best taste in film and theatre--although I never understood her love of Seven Seals. Suekins as I called her cheered me up so much in those days. Someone who always looked on the brighter side of things. Thank you for your love and your friendship. My heart goes out to all your family and close friends. You will be so missed.

I worked with Sue once on a play called The Mountain Goat’s Gift in 1997, along with her lifelong friend Shannon Sponagle. I was an aspiring young director and Sue was already an experienced stage manager who helped keep things on track. I’m thinking of her understated humour and sense of irony that seemed to emerge from a deep well of wisdom. I am grateful for that little span of weeks those many moons ago. Be at rest, Sue.

I had the privilege to get to know Sue while working with her for a few years on the corporate records management team. With her kindness, warmth, humour and wit she made work fun. Sue was a very intelligent and cultured person and had many amusing anecdotes ranging from her varied experiences working in theatre to her pets whom she so dearly loved. Not to detract from her competence, knowledge, expertise and the value she brought to the records management team and province. Sue and I forged a genuine personal friendship that has endured in the almost ten years since I left the records management team. That is unusual for me and speaks to how special a person Sue was. I will greatly miss her and my heart goes out to her family and other friends.

I never met Sue in person. She was a presence on social media posting charming photos of Oz, a large and apparently ill tempered cat. I expected that sometime we would meet while she was walking Charlie, the dog who would rather not walk. Our last online interaction, the day after Halloween, concerned a swell twig broom apparently abandoned by a witch. Independently we had both noticed it on a path beside the BiHi and posted photos. We decided that the broom should be presented to a wicker woman who was attached to a nearby power pylon. The wicker woman and her broom will be my reminder of a remarkable sounding woman.

It was a joy to work with Sue. She had so many silly anecdotes that always made any project better. I will miss our chats about our dogs, coffee meetings, and the many links to new Fluevogs that always popped into my inbox. One of my favourite memories is Sue telling me that she somehow seemed to collect Susans as friends — a little clique of Sues. I’m not a Sue, but I’m all the better for knowing one.

I will miss Sue whenever I watch Buffy, listen to Joel Plaskett, and see a pair of Fluevogs on sale.
I hear her voice in my ear encouraging me to travel, to go to the farmer's market, make a plan with a friend, and cook a meal for people I love.
We got to travel together again this year and we went to our favourite spots in Montreal--many coffees at Cafe Olympico, soup dumplings, and a slice of kouign-amann. We were front-row at the Nick Cave show, exploring galleries, and dining at Beauty's and Leonard Cohen's old favourite breakfast spot. What a blessing that we got to go one last time and do the things that we loved together.
I cannot fathom that she is gone. It has crushed me. All I can do is focus on what a gift it is to have known her for nearly 20 years. I think we inspired bravery in one another--to book those trips, to seek out beauty in all its forms. I will hold her and this feeling in my heart--to go, to do, to try, to connect with people and the world.
I am so proud to have been her friend. How lucky we were.

Sue was a dear friend of mine for over 30 years, since we first worked together on a theatre project in Halifax in 1993. While we moved in similar circles in university, it took making strange and fragmentary postmodern work in basements and galleries (to small but dedicated audiences) before we really clicked. And while I’ve always had some difficulty making many lasting friends, Sue made friendship seem easy. We fell into an easy rapport on that project and never let up. When I moved away for good in 1996, we stayed in regular touch, first through letters, then emails, then texts. And we always saw each other whenever I returned home. She was both an extraordinarily supportive and gracious friend and someone I could rely on for honest and unvarnished opinions about everything that mattered, particularly what books and movies were worth my time. We didn’t always agree, but I always looked forward to our discussions. The last time I saw her in person was in the summer of 2024. I was in Halifax directing a two-week workshop of a project I’d somehow managed to convince her to use her vacation time to work on with me! It was a delightful artistic reunion—for both of us—and I was hoping we’d get to do it again someday. Sadly, that is just one of many things I will now miss about you, Sue. Thanks for your years of friendship. You were a true original.

Sue, you not only had an impact on my own life as a colleague, but also on my mom and aunt.
It was a pleasure to work with someone so patient, knowledgeable, and down-to-earth about records management. Not many people inject humour into records management, but you did alongside your considerable expertise. I will always appreciate that!
I also really enjoyed our conversations about music, live or recorded, and films together. Beyond the tasks at hand, these were always highlights of the workday for me too. I won't be able to listen to Prefab Sprout the same way.
We were very fortunate to know someone as wonderful as Sue, and I extend my deepest condolences to her loved ones as well.

I had the immense pleasure of working with Sue for some years as a Corporate Records Analyst with the Province of Nova Scotia. She was brilliant and so knowledgeable and such an incredible and supportive mentor. She had the most amazing wit and sense of humor. No one could crack a quip quite like Sue did.
Sue shared endless and often hilarious stories about her beloved four-legged companions. Her baking, if you were fortunate enough for her to bake for you, was legendary and everything stopped in the office for at least a few minutes when Sue brought out goodies to share.
She had marvelous style (all those dresses and sunglasses!), and we had many, many chats about music and art and concerts.
Mary, Andre, Annette and especially Andrew – know that she spoke of you all often, and with love. My heart is broken for you all.

I wish I’d been to see her more. I was going to come to Halifax to celebrate her retirement and I am gutted she did not get to enjoy what she so definitely deserved.
