Carl Edward MacKinnon Obituary

Carl Edward MacKinnon passed away on December 22, 2025, just days before his 68th birthday.

Born on December 24, 1957, Carl grew up in the north end of Sydney with his parents, Jean and George MacKinnon, and his siblings. From a young age, he worked alongside his father in the family businesses, learning the values of perseverance and a strong work ethic that would guide him throughout his life. Later, during his time at the Cape Breton Post in advertising, Carl had the opportunity to show his creative side, which is something he took great pride in and genuinely enjoyed.

Carl met and married the love of his life, Diane, and together they built a family that became the center of his world. Diane was his partner in every sense of the word, and Carl often spoke of her with beaming pride. She cared for him with unwavering devotion, and he never took that love or support for granted. Their marriage was rooted in love, respect, and genuine admiration, and it shaped the home and values they built together. Carl was also a deeply proud father to Leah Marsh (Jason), Rachel Galvin (James), Mark MacKinnon (Hope), and Bethany MacKinnon (Jeremy).

Carl’s greatest passion in life was his family. His face would light up when talking about his children and grandchildren. To his children, Carl was a steady and constant presence, a lighthouse they could always rely on for a pep talk, reassurance, and unconditional love. He was a mentor, an encourager, and a trusted sounding board, with a rare ability to help remove the weight of the world and make even the hardest moments feel manageable. Although he was often perceived as a wallflower, Carl had a way of making everyone in the room feel welcome and seen.

He was a beloved grandfather to Julia, Joseph, Greyson, and Emmitt through Leah; Wolf and Grace through Rachel; Vida and Rhodes through Mark; and Katherine through Bethany. He loved making his grandchildren smile, sneaking them candy whenever he could, and sharing small moments that made them feel special.

Carl lived with grit and determination. Although he faced health challenges throughout his life, he met them head-on, doing whatever he needed to do to remain present for the people he loved. Because of that perseverance, his family was gifted with decades together that were once uncertain and are now deeply treasured. Carl always told his children, “Never give up.”

Alongside his steady strength, Carl had an endearing sense of humor. He loved to joke that his cooking was award-winning, often claiming his sandwiches had earned international acclaim, including prestigious (and entirely fictional) awards in Germany, Paris, or London. These stories were always told with a twinkle in his eye and were part of the joy of being around him. It was impossible not to smile around Carl.

Carl shared a close and loving bond with his siblings. He loved and adored them deeply, and that love was returned in full. Their relationships were marked by loyalty, laughter, and lifelong connection, and they remained an important part of his world throughout his entire life.

He is survived by his wife Diane; his children and grandchildren; and his siblings Bernie MacKinnon (Janet), Georgina Hubley (Bruce), Dina MacKinnon, and his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Jean and George MacKinnon, and by his brother Joey MacKinnon, who passed away before Carl was born.

Carl will be remembered for his compassion, resilience, loyalty, and the warmth and humor he brought into every room. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, in the strength he passed on, and in the stories that will be told for generations.
