Joyce Marilyn McKenzie, 91
Glace Bay, N.S.
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our mom, Joyce Marilyn McKenzie of Glace Bay on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital surrounded by her family. Joyce was the daughter of the late Duncan and Myrtle (Murphy) MacDonald of New Waterford, N.S.
Born in New Waterford, N.S., Joyce moved to Glace Bay at the tender age of four after the passing of her mom. Mom lived a very long and active life right up to the very end. She had nurtured many lifelong friendships and had a natural ability to connect with people of all generations and walks of life. Mom was spiritual, intelligent, funny, and knowledgeable. Her favourite medium to keeping in touch was Canada Post. She would always say “Never underestimate the power of a stamp,” personal notes and greeting cards with her distinctive penmanship were sent far and wide.
Mom was a TOPS member, she started the first Stroke Club in Glace Bay, she was on the board of the N.S. Liberal Women’s Commission, an usher at the Savoy Theatre and a member of the C.B. Ukelele Players.
Mom’s passion was politics. She was only “RED” and worked many elections, which was where many of her personal relationships started. Mom worked for both our Local MP and our Local MLA in their constituency offices at one time and was very proud to be employed with both.
Mom is survived by her seven children: Anne, Dan (Sue), Catherine, J.J., Greg (Cindy), Nick (Ann), and Wayne. She will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Ryan, Paul, Nicole, Daniel, Meaghan, Alex, Duncan, and Riley; as well as her seven great-grandchildren.
Along side her parents, Joyce was predeceased by her husband Daniel (Dit) McKenzie, grandson Jeffery, a brother Wayne, and sister Joan.
We ask that in lieu of flowers, if you so choose, that a donation be made to the Glace Bay Foodbank.
We would like to acknowledge all family and friends who provided assistance in many ways throughout mom’s life journey, particularly in her later years as most of her children lived away. Thank you all!
As per moms wishes, cremation has taken place under the care and compassion of T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay. 902-849-4199.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, in St. Anne’s Parish, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at 11 a.m., in St. Anne’s Parish, Glace Bay, with Fr. MacLeen presiding, and a light lunch will be provided after the mass.
