Bernard ‘Bernie’ Steele

It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of Bernard ‘Bernie’ Steele on Sunday, November 30, 2025, at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Born in Sydney he was the son of the late Jack and Evelyn (MacPhee) Steele. Bernie leaves behind his loving wife Juanita of 26 years; his son Jodi; grandchildren, Gregory and Hannah; their mom, Amanda. He is also survived by his sisters, Theresa (Donnie Messenger), Rita (Frank Penszski), Bev (Ralph Young), Sarah (Benji Boutilier), Maryette (late Cameron); brothers, Reggie, George, Skip (late Marie); in-laws, Flora and Garry Noel (Buddy and Holly)Wayne Brown, Patricia, Nickie, and Clifford Morrison; aunt Thelma Dixon; his god daughter, Melanie Green; many nieces, nephews and cousins from the MacPhee, Parsons and Steele families, as well as his furbabies Gismo and Pixbee.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Rose and Ursula; brothers, John, David, Bobby and Jimmer; Uncle Gar Parsons; mother-in-law, Agnes Dixon.
Bernie was born and raised in Mira Gut where he enjoyed life to the fullest with his family and great times at Kenwood dance hall. Bernie was a friend to everyone. He was employed for Burns Construction and Clearview Vinyl Siding. He enjoyed playing pool at the Army Navy and attending music events at the Savoy with his dear friend Clarence Sampson. Bernie was a member of the Sergeant’s Mess where he enjoyed rocking and rolling.
The family would like to thank Dr. Mark Ellerker who was like family to us. Thank you to the Palliative Care Staff and the staff of the Glace Bay Hospital, 3 West for their wonderful care. Thank you to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and Dr. McInnis for your care and compassion, and lastly, we want to thank our family, neighbours and great friends for all of your support.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Monday, December 8, 2025, from 10 – 12 p.m. with a celebration of life to follow at 12 p.m. with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. Burial to take place in St. Anne’s Cemetery with a reception to follow at the Glace Bay Pensioners Club, 445 Upper North St., Glace Bay. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay, (902-849-4199).
