Catherine Raylene Power Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Raylene (Small) Power announce her peaceful passing from ALS on November 28, 2025 surrounded by her family at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

Born in Sydney, NS she was the daughter of the late Mary Anne, Josie, and Michael Small. Raylene was dearly loved by her family. She will be missed by her siblings; Frances, Billy, Daniel (Sandra), Michelle (Scott), Joyce, Chris (Karen), and brother-in-law, Peter as well as her nieces and nephews. She was loved and respected by her in-laws. Raylene was predeceased by her parents, her brother Joseph Gerard, who died in infancy, and her adoring sister Elaine.

Raylene had an extensive career as a registered nurse (RN) spanning over 40 years. She was focused in surgical medicine and spent the last 17 years in the pre-admission surgery clinic. Her commitment to her profession was evident in the dignity, respect and compassion she showed her colleagues, patients and their families.

Raylene lived life to the fullest and had no regrets. Anyone who knew her knew she loved shopping, knitting socks and mittens, camping with friends, Celtic music, reading and she could always be found in the kitchen with her shower cap on baking treats with a pot of vanilla simmering on the stove.

She is survived by her loving husband, Glenn; children, Ryan (Stephanie), Jeff (Najia), and Jennifer; and her grandchildren, Aleigh, Bryce, Gabe, Lauren and Lucas.

Raylene was a special person to anyone who was fortunate to know her. She was the most kind and loving mother, mother-in-law, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend. She loved spending time with her friends, family and especially her grandchildren with whom she shared a special bond with each one.

As a family we would like to thank all the care givers at the VON, Cape Breton County Homemakers, Dr. Shimon, Dr. Fraser and the Palliative Care doctors and nurses at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital that have helped us throughout this journey. We would be remiss not to mention the enduring and very special care; love and attention provided so unconditionally by Dad and family members. We will forever be grateful.
