Garfield “Gary” O’Brien
Gardiner Mines, 1946 – 2025
It is with incredible sadness that we announce the passing of Garfield (Gary) O’Brien, aged 79.
Gary was the most loving husband to his devoted wife of 57 years, Barbara, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and partnership. Gary would be the first to tell you that his greatest pride and joy were his three children: Gary (Ann) O’Brien, Janet (John) Evans, and Melissa (David) Ruginski. But his most cherished role was as a 'Poppy' to his grandchildren: Alyssa (Nathan) MacNeil, Taylor (Nicole) Evans, Cameron Evans, Matthew (Maria) O’Brien, Leia O’Brien, Samuel Ruginski, and Alex Ruginski; as well as his precious great-grandchildren: Ryder, Brielle, Ellie, and SophiaLynn, each of whom brought immense joy to his life.
Gary is survived by his sister, Mary Ellen (Edgar) MacDonald, and was predeceased by his brothers Kevin and Richard, and by his parents, Patrick and Mary O’Brien.
A coal miner by trade and by heart, Gary was known far and wide as one of the hardest-working men to ever set foot underground. He carried with him the grit, strength, and friendships of Cape Breton’s mining community, and he took immense pride in the work that defined so much of his life.
One of Gary’s greatest joys was riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He was deeply proud of his bike and loved the freedom and friendship that came with every ride.
Beyond his work, he will be remembered for something even greater: being the best father, husband and Poppy anyone could hope for. His dedication to his family was unwavering, his presence steady and comforting, his love unconditional.
Gary’s warmth, humour, and humility touched all who knew him. He will be missed more deeply than words can express, yet his spirit, stories, and values will forever live on in the generations he nurtured.
Our family is deeply grateful to Da’s medical team for walking beside him with kindness and skill. A special thank-you goes to Dr. Kylene MacKillop for the attentive and compassionate care she provided.
True to the compassion Da showed throughout his life, he chose to be an organ and tissue donor, giving others the chance at a better life.
We are heartbroken to say goodbye, and Da’s absence will be felt every day. We will miss him beyond measure. May he rest in peace, reunited with those who went before him, and forever held in the hearts of those who remain.
Cremation has taken place under the care and compassion of T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay, N.S. 902-849-4199. Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and a Funeral service will follow at 12 p.m., all in Tracey’s Funeral Home Glace Bay. Interment will take place in St. James Cemetery, Gardiner Mines.
