Helen Jane (Miles) Penny

Port Morien, N.S.

After ninety turns around the sun It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mom grandmother, great grand mother and friend, Helen Jane (Miles) Penny of Port Morien at the age of 90. Helen passed peacefully in her sleep at the An Cala palliative care unit in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on November 15, 2025.

Helen was born and raised in Port Morien. Over the years she worked in retail, forestry, and other sectors and was a trained baker. She focused on her family, raising her six children and caring for others including her grandchildren. She was a member of St. Paul’s Anglican church. Helen loved living near the ocean, playing cards especially with her sister Bertha, and she enjoyed travelling specifically by ship.

Helen was immensely proud of her family and enjoyed celebrating their accomplishments. She was the last surviving member of the Miles family.

Helen is survived by her children Claudia, Cora (John), Lana (Patty), Chris, and Lowell; grandchildren Jack, Todd (Natasha), Kyle, Krista, (Alexander), Angela (Edwin), Kelsey and Amanda; great-grandchildren Brandon, Cole, Riley, Jaxon, and Levi. Helen is also survived by her sister-in-law Gladys Miller and several nieces and nephews in Canada and the U.S.

Helen was predeceased by her parents Adelaide (Murrant) and John P Miles, her husband William (Billy) Penny, son Lionel, son in law Jack, great grandson Cameron and siblings Alena, Cecil, Roy, Edgar, and Bertha.

A special thank you to the staff of Victoria Haven Nursing Home, the Glace Bay General Hospital and the C.B. Regional Hospital emergency and palliative care units. Mom was fortunate to have as her physician for over 40 years Dr Carol Critchley who provided her with the best of care.

Helen’s family will receive visitors in T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialist 370 Reserve St. Glace Bay, N.S. 902-849-4199, from 12 to 1 p.m. on November 20, 2025, with a Celebration of Life following the visitation.
