Birch Grove

Hugh Athol MacDonald, age 82, passed away on November 13, 2025 at home in Birch Grove. Hugh was a son of the late Malcolm A. and Doris (nee Taylor) MacDonald.

Hugh is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dianne (nee Boutilier) MacDonald, son David (Jen) MacDonald, daughter Doris (Floyd) Butts, grandchildren Megan (Andrew) and Jordan (Chelsea); great-granddaughters Hannah, Skylar and Myrah; and special nephew Keith (Wonda) Boone and boys. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Pam Forward, Debbie (Ian) Henderson, Gayle (Robert) MacDougall, Laurie (Daniel) Cole, Mavis (Frank) Susin and Myrna Murphy; brothers-in-law Chris (Stacey) Boutilier and Tom Doyle; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Hugh was predeceased by four brothers, infant Allister, Allister, Keith and Jack; two sisters, Anne Boone and Alice MacPherson, father and mother-in-law, Howard and Kathleen Boutilier, brothers-in-law Frank Boone, George MacPherson, Howard Boutilier and Joe Forward; and sisters-in-law Elaine MacDonald and Dawn Doyle.

A lifelong resident of Birch Grove, Hugh worked as a coal miner and later for Devco Security. A humble man who didn’t care much about pomp and circumstance, Hugh said what he meant and meant what he said. He possessed a sharp wit and a great memory. Hugh was an active grandfather who enjoyed family get-togethers, Blue Jays game days, NASCAR races and spending time outdoors. Known for his ability to fix or build anything, he could often be found in his garage with his dog Daisy by his side. He was a serving member of the Birch Grove Volunteer Fire Department.

Hugh will be forever missed and remembered for the deep love he shared with his family.

According to Hugh’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service.
