It is with immense sadness that we announce that, with his family by his side, John Edgar Cox, 78, passed peacefully on November 6th, 2025, in the Halifax Infirmary after a lengthy battle with Cancer. He was born in Shelburne to John Clare Cox and Margaret (Peggy) (nee Allen). He was the oldest of three children and brother to Anne and Judy. John met his future wife Corrine Barrett in 1972 at the Jubilee Boat Club. They were married in 1973 and were completely devoted to each other for 52 years.
John spent most of his work life in the retail industry beginning at a tender age helping his father and grandfather In the Cox family store in Shelburne. Early in his marriage to Corrine, they relocated to Calgary for a year before returning to Halifax where John resumed his career in the retail sector. He worked at Manson Drugs (Woolco), K-Mart and lastly Zellers where he worked until he retired.
John loved the outdoors, and fishing was his favourite past time. He also enjoyed hunting with his brother -in-law, Wally and loved a spirited game of cards whether it be with his sisters and niece or his Barrett family. He greatly enjoyed Tim Hortons coffee and his Sunday outings with his sisters and niece. John was an avid reader and loved traditional country music, especially Shania Twain, wildlife, nature and the ocean. His fondness for the Toronto Blue Jays was only surpassed by his love of the Toronto Maple Leafs. This love was displayed by his daily wearing of a variety of baseball caps that changed with the sporting seasons.
John is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Corrine (Barrett); sister, Judy (Dave); and niece, Kathlene McGuinness. He will be greatly missed by his Barrett family: sisters-in-law, Elaine (Barry) Stevens, Denise (Mike) Marriott and Gail (David) Julien; brothers-in-law, Kevin (Elizabeth) Barrett and David (Denis) Barrett; nephews, Ryan (Erika) and Dylan (Kailee) Marriott and Brandon Julien; nieces, Jennifer (Reg) Madden, Julia (Kevin) McCarthy, Emilie (Kyle) Julien and Sophie (A.J.) Barrett; great niece and nephew, Marena and Declan Madden.
He was predeceased by his parents, John Clare Cox and Margaret (Peggy) nee Allen; sister, Anne McGuinness; father and mother-in-law, Walter & Serena (nee Sampson) Barrett; and brother-in-law, Wally Barrett.
In keeping with John’s wishes, a Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, November 15, 2025, from 1:00-3:00 pm in T.J. Tracey Cremation & Burial Specialists, 71 McQuade Lake Crescent, Beechville. Private burial will take place at a later date. Family flowers only.
