I was deeply saddened to hear of Bill's passing. He was truly a force to be reckoned with - one of those rare individuals who had his own unmistakable way of moving through the world. He was a brilliant entrepreneur, and one who brought auctions and the Halifax Flea Market to life with his energy and passion. Bill always had a story or an interest that made conversations with him richer. It was only a few months ago when Bill and I danced at the Buffalo Club and I'm grateful for that moment. He will be missed. by many. My heartfelt condolences to Bill's children, Janice and Shane, and the Monto family.

Bill called himself an “Idea Man” and if you followed along on one of the whimsical journeys, you would find a colourful, inventive idea with a great story woven in. I already miss the dances and the daily calls that always started off with “Yeah Ruthie……”. Bill you are one of a kind who lived life large and I am grateful that we made an impact on each other.

My sympathies on your loss. I grew up in Eastern Passage on Scott Drive, just before Janice Ann Drive. My parents were Bill and Doris Muise and the Mont family was very well known and respected, deservedly. Very possible Mr. Mont was a friend of my father, who passed in the late 70's. I was born in '67 and think of the Mont surname as legendary, and a read of his list of accomplishments confirms that. God Bless!

Bill was like family to me. You know the ones. At times he was the stubborn kid or the wise older Uncle. Many a discussion about history or art ended by agreeing to disagree. Always the planner, he once shared an idea to put huts on Devil’s Island and run ghost hunting trips for “those not of weak heart.” Always thinking of how to make the next dollar. His heart was bigger than his stature. Many a time he would help out a friend in need. He will be missed. I am sure he is in a better place and has already reconnected with Steve and Emo up there. Watch out Heaven, the auction boys are together again.

My Dad worked for Bill many years ago as a carpenter building homes on Janice Ann Drive that Bill had disassembled from the former DND Clarence Park community on the lands that are now known as the Autoport Car terminal in Eastern Passage. The homes were initially constructed as pre-fabs and Bill took the opportunity to salvage them, they are still present on the street looking very much like they did in the 60’s. As a young boy growing up just a few doors away from Bill Monts home and the old barn where he hoarded all sorts of old stuff from used windows to a Jigger, an all terrain overland n swamp watercraft. The neighbourhood kids where all curious an devilish to see what was behind those bigs doors. The barn and property was all once part of Scott Horne’s homestead an farm on Hornes Rd. He had a way of brightening my day each time he came to the clinic, and I found myself looking forward to his appointments to share in his company. I remember Bill from my early days, Managing the Sackville Drive-In Theatre & the Capitol Theatre. In 1973, he spoke to my District Manager about opening the 1st Flea Market at the Sackville Dr-In. I Resigned, in the Spring of 1974, when I was ordered to close the Capitol Theatre, & Bill started the Flea Markets at the Sackville Dr-In, that Summer, which I reminded him of, just a year or 2 ago. I took a few calls from Bill, in my Real Estate Management Position in DND, at CFB Halifax, years later, as he liked to enquire about DND properties adjacent to his properties. I more recently became a Facebook Friend of Bill's, as a result of seeing him regularly at the Fairview Legion Dances, & I had wonderful conversations that I truly enjoyed with Bill. What an Amazing man, who accomplished so much, yet I think his huge multitude of Friends, were really important to him. Bill Mont will be Missed by so many. R.I.P. Bill. My sincere Condolences to & God Bless Bill's wonderful Family.

Bill (Mr. Mont) was one of the most eccentric people I have ever met. Many may not know that he was a member of the very military Unit that I am part of, The Princess Louise Fusiliers, just to add something more to his repertoire. I used to visit him at his last home and have lenghy conversations. His upbeat attitude and sage advice we're always interesting and well received. He was an icon in the HRM and he will be missed. So sorry to hear of Bill's passing. The Lr. Sackville Flea Market, (approximately 35 yrs ago) was the start of my sales career, which started with my sister and I selling 11 different flavors of fudge. In 2009 I returned to school and took my real estate license, a career that I loved. I can remember sitting in my office, looking out the window, and asking myself....how am I ever going to sell a $300,000. house? After my first sale, my thoughts were....it's the same thing as selling a piece of fudge. A sale is a sale. Bill Mont gave me the opportunity by joining his market! Thank you Bill, you will always be remembered! RIP!

On behalf of Cindy and I as well as our family (who all knew Bill personally and some even worked for him), we would like to offer Janice, Shane and the rest of the Mont family sincere condolences on Bill’s passing.
I remember so many times Bill would call and say ”Sam I’ve got a job for you”. One time it was to get rid of boxes and boxes of typewriter ribbons he had bought for a penny a piece.
I said Bill I'd like to help you out but I think that market has shrunk a bit since the discovery of the computer. But Bill Mont was old school. The next call came to ask me if I would organize and sell the things he had in a warehouse in Spryfield. I went to see it and it was mostly old furniture missing drawers and other pieces. Everything including a very old piano with many missing keys. I had to decline his offer but it was always a blast connecting with Bill over many years.
His family asked me to host his 70th or75th (i think) surprise birthday party at the Westin ? I think. It was a great time and I was honored to have been asked to do it.
He gave me a piece of advice once that I should have listened to. I had opened the Metro Weekend Market in the old Moosehead Brewery building on Windmill Road which was in direct competetion with Bill's Flea Markets. But because of our friendship Bill would always drop in to chat with absolutly no animosity. He taught me a lot about that type of business. The first weekend we opened we had every one of the hundreds of booths rented and over 10,000 people come thru. Bill comes in and says "great work Sam, it looks fantastic". "You should walk away from it now". I said "why Bill"? and he said " Sam you and your vendors will never be able to have a better weekend than this one, which means its all downhill from here", with a huge laugh. Well he was 100 % correct, lol.
So many Sundays my daughter Shayna and I would head out VERY early to set up and try to sell a bunch of Bill’s “collectables” for him. Plus visiting him at Northwood with my son Ryan always added a few more “ Bill Mont Tales”. I will really miss Bill as will many others. Bill's support of so many charity groups always impressed me so much. A true Haligonian who actually used to own the Oland's castle on Young Avenue.
RIP my old friend, the Flea Market King
Sam

I remember meeting Bill at Bedford Place Mall at the flea market. I was doing a fundraiser for my youth group and he had lots of questions, then proceeded to buy a good number of the tickets we were selling. He was so sweet, kind and thoughtful. He genuinely cared about community, youth, and the things going on with our areas. I always admired him and his story. I ended up working at the bedford flea market for a few years too, at one of the doors, alternating weeks with a friend for a while. He was a special human and will be missed by a great many. As we walk during our journey of life, we make contact with many others, but only a few leaves an indelible mark in the memory bank. These few possess unique talents which makes you realize they are special, and the memories they leave behind last for your life time.
Bill was just such a person. Engaging, enchanting, unpredictable. With a love of life unsurpassed. Every day was an adventure, and every hour was an event waiting to happen. Every minute was an opportunity to make contact with a new human being. Every second was a gift to allow his never stopping mind to come up with a new idea he could pursue.
My involvement with Bill started with a situation involving a dispute on a small fishing shack located at Fisherman’s Cove in Eastern Passage. We then moved on to a castle in Ireland, and many more wonderful experiences after that.
Bill lead a full, exciting and wonderful life. He immeasurably enhanced my life and I am forever grateful for him making my life more magical than it would otherwise be.
RIP, my friend.

I will always remember Mr. Mont with fawn memories and so much respect. He gave me advice on several occasions, along with his Daughter Christine on how to present at markets. My first encounter and opportunity as a seller was at the Penhorn Flea Market. I was never without a "spot" and treated with such respect... Last winter Mr. Mont paid his monthly visit to Alderney market, we chatted for quit a while about what he's been up to... he gave me a little 10 second dance and told me that he loves to dance and still does on a weekly. basis. He was a sharp dresser and loved his "fedoras". Like most we often forget, that no one lives on forever. But seeing this post today, not only saden me, but brought back the"why's" I do what I do... That man could sell "anything", it was just who he was and he always did it with finesse! You will be greatly missed Mr Mont... may your soul rest in eternal paradise
