James Terrence(Terry) Burke
Terry Burke, loving father, grandfather and devoted husband, left this world peacefully, content and grateful for a life well lived, on October 21, 2025. Born in New Waterford on September 28, 1948, Terry was the cherished son of Jack and Aggie Burke, who shaped his gentle spirit and unwavering generosity from the very beginning.
On May 10, 1974, Terry married the love of his life, Patsy MacKinnon, and together they shared a beautiful journey for over 45 years. Side by side, they raised two daughters, Nancy (Derrick Morton) and Susan (Ronny Priefer), who remain the pride and joy of his heart. Terry was the quintessential “girl dad” forever offering a strong shoulder, a loving hug, and his signature words of wisdom: “You are tough as nails and twice as rusty.”
Terry’s legacy extends to his beloved grandchildren, David and Veronica, and his fur grandbabies Digby, Dottie, and Hope, each of whom brought him endless delight and joy. Terry also leaves behind his sister Sandra Jackson and his brother Larry Burke and their families.
Terry was predeceased by his loving wife Patsy and from that moment on his life was never the same without her because he always said she was his life. Their partnership was the stuff of legends marked by laughter, devotion, and a shared love for family and classic country tunes.
A hard worker by nature, Terry spent over 30 years at the Sydney Steel Plant, where he was known for his tireless dedication and the ease with which he put others first. Whether at work or among friends, he was always ready to lend a helping hand, often prepared to give the shirt off his back if needed and expecting nothing in return. His home was always open, filled with warmth, laughter, and, more often than not, the comforting aroma of peanut butter sandwiches. His kindness and compassion made him a friend to many, and his easygoing humor ensured that every gathering was a little brighter.
Dad’s spirit will forever remain woven into the fabric of our lives through his love for Ma, his devotion to his family, his steadfast friendships, and his delight in the simple pleasures. As we remember him, may we carry forward his legacy of kindness, laughter, and generosity. Dad had a wonderful life, and he leaves behind hearts that are fuller, smiles that are wider, and memories that will never fade.
There will be no visitation. A private memorial will be held at a later date. In his honor, we ask that you tell a corny joke, lend a helping hand, and don’t forget to treat yourself to a peanut butter sandwich. Our hearts are broken and we will miss him dearly, but we are forever blessed because he was our Dad.
