The family of Gladys Ann (MacDonald) Hutt is sad to announce the passing of a very special sister, aunt, grand aunt, great grand aunt and godmother, on October 16, 2025.
Gladys was the sixth of ten siblings born to Mary (MacMaster) and James A MacDonald on August 3rd, 1941. She grew up in Long Point and after spending time in Montreal and Port Hawkesbury she chose Halifax as her home in the early 1960’s. She worked for Bell & Grant, Consolidated Supply, Maritime Computers, and Dalhousie University, where she spent the last 15 years of her career, retiring in 2007.
Gladys met Harold Hutt during the time she worked at Consolidated Supply. They married in 1969 and enjoyed their early years together on Edinburg Street until they moved to Deepwood Crescent in Halifax. Gladys took great pride in her home and was very selective in how she decorated and furnished it.
Family was extremely important to Gladys and she was very generous in sharing her love. She welcomed family for visits and she enthusiastically hosted many birthdays and Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving dinners. She cared about her nieces and nephews (and grand nieces and nephews) and we all remember the cards, gifts, calls and advice she offered over the years. She was the first to brag about their accomplishments and she was always up-to-date on what everyone was doing. She was proud of her four Godchildren – Larry, Jason, Jeannie and Jake – and always stayed connected to their lives.
Gladys collected a wide group of friends over the years through work, the church, her neighbours and her travels. She often hosted wine and cheese events and dinners and welcomed everyone with love and comments designed to provoke a laugh. Her Deepwood Crescent family was important to her and she has stayed connected to the successive generations of families of her closest neighbours, particularly the Gallagher’s, MacIsaac’s and Smith’s.
Her Catholic faith was a constant throughout her life and she attended daily mass. She gave considerable time to her Church, particularly Our Lady of Perpetual Help and, more recently, St Benedict’s. She was an active member of the CWL and made many friends over the years. She was generous in donating her time. Her generosity and commitment to helping others extended to Ghana, Africa, where she spent a year 2001-2002.
Gladys had the travel bug and she explored the world. In the early years, she and Harold enjoyed Bermuda and cruises. Later in life she explored the Holy Land and destinations across North America, Europe and Australia. She made many friends on these trips.
Overall, she was a strong, sensitive and highly caring person who wanted the best for those she loved.
Gladys is survived by her siblings; Margaret (John) Mojek, Clare (Late Lawrence MacEachern) MacEachern, Donnie, Anne Marie (John Mattie), Lloyd (Bernadette) and Ed (Raylene); and their families as well as her sister’s-in-law Marion and Grace. She was predeceased by her husband Harold; her parents James A and Mary (MacMaster) MacDonald; and her siblings Kathleen (Vincent Brown), Bernie and Frank.
Visitation will be held on October 20th from 6-8 pm in Saint Benedict Church; St Joseph room, 45 Radcliffe Drive. A funeral mass will be held on October 21st at 12:15 pm in Saint Benedict Catholic Church; Fr Simon Lobo, CC officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice Halifax, The QEII Foundation, or the charity of your choice.
