I'm so sorry to hear that Uncle Joe has passed ... my thoughts and prayers are with you!!! Wish we weren't so far away! And I could be there to give you a huge hug!
He was an amazing man and I have nothing but the best memories of growing up with you both! But at least he is at peace now. I know how hard the last bit is for the ones watching and wanting those last couple conversations to last forever.
So, I just want you to know I am here if you need anything and you all are in my thoughts!
Love you, Aunt Marg!

My name is Mandi McLellan. I’m a firefighter with St. Catharines Fire, and I had the honour of working with your dad.
He was always so kind to me and had an incredible sense of humour.
I’ll never forget a fire I went to very early in my career. Joe was my captain, and I knew my job was to stay with him and follow his lead. When we arrived on scene, I don’t even think the truck had fully stopped before he was off and gone. I remember a moment of panic thinking, “Holy crap, I’ve lost my officer!” I eventually found him and quickly learned to pick up the pace and keep a close eye on where he was headed. (I definitely underestimated how fast that man could move!)
I also remember a dinner at Station 1 when we ordered a bunch of different kinds of sausages to try. A couple of us dared to go for the habanero sausages — probably the hottest thing I’ve ever eaten, and I love spicy food! Joe laughed at us as we struggled through them, so we challenged him to try one. He took one bite, and I’ve never seen someone’s face turn so red so quickly. I swear there was steam coming out of his ears.
I’m so sorry to hear of your dad’s passing. His name still comes up often around the firehall kitchen table as we share stories. I hope you can find comfort in this time of grief, knowing your dad’s life was well lived in service to others — and that he left behind many fond memories among those who had the privilege to work with him.
With deepest sympathy,
Mandi McLellan

I had the pleasure to work with Smokin Joe or the Sidewinder as he was affectionately referred to after a tree accident. Joe was a no nonsense and light hearted mentor to me and many colleagues, but what will always have me thinking of him are the beautiful cedar bird feeders he built in his spare time. I purchased several for myself, family and friends and they continue to provide joy to this day. Every time I see the dozens of songbirds feeding from these feeders, I think of Joe and all he meant to me.
All the best as you keep Joe in your hearts forever.

To Joe’s Family
My condolences. I had the pleasure to work with Joe on Platoon 1, while Joe was an Acting Captain. Joe was a hard worker at the hall and on scene. I remembering a house fire on Haynes Ave., Joe was my Captain that shift. We were overhauling a bedroom checking for spot fires. It was still quite smoke filled as I turned on my flashlight to get a better look between the walls. In an instant I was targeted with a blast from the hose. It was Joe at the nozzle thinking my flashlight was a ‘spot fire’ to be dosed. We had a good laugh about it and carried on. He was always willing to help out, or ask how your family was doing. He was a great guy.

My Aunt Lenore of TBay would talk about Joe & Marg, sharing updates about Joe. During my trip to Nova Scotia in June 2024 I met them in person, stopping in for a few moments sharing a treat on behalf of my aunt & uncle. I was told that a phone call to TBay while indulging in the gift I left, chatting with my aunt & uncle. It was my pleasure to take the time to meet these folks. I'm sorry to hear of your loss Marg.
