With profound sadness, we announce the passing of our amazing wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Mary “Eileen” Billard, age 78, passed away peacefully at Northwood Halifax Campus on Sept 30, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family, following a lengthy illness.
Eileen was born in Truro, NS, to the late George and Jean Moore. As a young woman, she moved to Halifax, where she met and married her husband, Raye. They shared 60 wonderful years together, raising two cherished children: daughter Rhonda (Ed) Bowdridge and son David Billard (Erica Gerrard).
Her nurturing spirit blossomed with the arrival of her grandchildren: Laura Bowdridge [Liam Gillis], Khrista (Derek) Sampson, Sarah Bowdridge [Josh Hynes], and Amanda Baiocco. Affectionately known as “Nanny Billard,” she found immense joy and pride in each of them, as well as in her treasured great-grandchildren: Easton, Everly, Amelia, and Jack. Her wisdom and warmth enveloped them all, bringing years of love—and more than a touch of spoiling.
Eileen embraced her role as homemaker, taking great pride in her home and garden. She also brought dedication and kindness to her various customer service roles, forming lasting friendships with coworkers and customers alike. A great listener and confidante, Eileen’s compassionate nature made people feel instantly at ease—even strangers.
A big personality in a small package, Eileen loved social events, especially those that involved dancing. If there was a party or a function at the Stadacona Mess, you could count on hearing her infectious laugh and seeing her joyful dance moves. Her presence brought warmth and energy to every occasion. She always looked for the good in people and in life, and her zest for living will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.
Of all the joys in her life, none surpassed the love she had for her family.
In addition to her parents, Eileen was predeceased by her cherished parents-in-law, Cecil and Marie Billard; sisters Helena Blais (Real Blais), Audrey Habel (Roger Habel), and Bonnie Rice; and brother-in-law Richard Billard.
She is survived by her sister Sheila (Dave) Fraser; sister-in-law Sandra Billard; brothers-in-law Doug Billard and Jim Rice; siblings from both her mother’s and father’s sides; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the team on 7C at Northwood Halifax Campus for their compassionate care during Eileen’s time there.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of TJ Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, October 19, from 2 PM to 4 PM at the Herring Cove Community Centre, 30 Latter Pond Lane, Herring Cove. The family invites you to join them for a drop-in reception, with words of remembrance shared at 3 PM.
