Rudolph Alexander MacDougall

Glace BAy

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Rudolph ‘Rudy’ Alexander MacDougall, who passed away peacefully on July 28, 2025, in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, at the age of 81. Born on June 27, 1944, Rudy was the beloved son of the late Rannie and Sally (MacIsaac) MacDougall.

Rudy was a dedicated auto body man by trade, known for his exceptional skill and meticulous work. Outside of his profession, Rudy had a deep passion for sports. He was an avid participant and fan of hockey, baseball, golf, and horse racing, finding immense joy and camaraderie in each. A true hockey enthusiast, Rudy was a season ticket holder for the Cape Breton Eagles since their inception, regularly attending games with his cherished friends Cecil, Dan, and Chuck. His competitive spirit and love for the game were evident to all who knew him. His many memories of his hockey days with Crusaders and Huff and Puff, of his baseball days with McKay’s Corner and his horse racing days with his brother Ronnie and the Saunders family were with him until his final days.

A proud achievement in Rudy's life was his 21 years of sobriety as a devoted member of Alcoholics Anonymous. His unwavering commitment to this journey was a testament to his strength, resilience, and inspiration to many. It not only changed his life but the life of those that loved him.

Rudy shared a loving life with his beloved wife, Doreen (Popwell) MacDougall, with whom he celebrated an incredible 60 years of marriage. They truly were each other’s best friends. He was a cherished father to his children, Cheryl (Shane) Christmas and Sonny (Donna). His grandchildren, Ryan (Danielle), Hunter (Holly) and his Princess Sage (Leonard) brought immense joy to his life, as did his great-grandchildren, Lyla and Landon, who were a source of great delight.

He is survived by his brother Victor and sister Ann (Basil) Marsh, sisters-in-law Karen MacPhee and Lucy (John) MacDonald and brothers-in-law Bobby Popwell and Craig (Pat) Popwell. He will also be fondly remembered by his best friend, Cecil MacQueen with whom he shared many years of laughter and companionship and by his many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, Rudy was predeceased by his father and mother-in-law Maurice and Vivian Popwell, his brother, Ronnie, his brothers-in-law Willie Popwell and Frank MacPhee and his sisters-in-law Lorna MacDougall, Myrna Popwell and Debbie Popwell and niece Darlene MacDonald.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Victoria Haven Nursing Home for their exceptional love and compassionate care for Rudy. They also wish to express their profound gratitude to the many friends who took the time to visit Dad in the nursing home, bringing him comfort and companionship in his final years.

Rudy's warmth, dedication to his family, his strength in his personal journey, and his passion for life will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Visitation will take place on Friday, August 1, 2025, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Community Hall at Glace Bay Miners Forum, under the direction of T.J. Tracey Funeral Home.
