Mariam 'Ruby' Billard Obituary
Mariam Ruby Billard, 93
Catalone, N.S.
It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Mariam “Ruby” Billard (née Lemoine), age 93, on July 20, 2025. A woman of unwavering strength, deep devotion, and generous spirit. Born on January 2, 1932, in Rose Blanche, Newfoundland, Ruby proudly carried the traditions of her Newfoundland upbringing throughout her life.
From a young age, Ruby was known for her hardworking nature and caring soul. At the age of 14, she moved to Cape Breton, where she worked diligently as a housekeeper and cook for many families in the Glace Bay area. Her talents in the kitchen were unmatched—she was an excellent baker and cook, famous for her sweets, preserves, fruit cakes, and homemade bread. She loved to share these homemade treats with family and friends. At 17, Ruby married the love of her life, Chub, beginning a remarkable 75-year journey of marriage, companionship, and unwavering love. After raising five children, she started her second career as a fisherwoman. She cherished the time spent on the boat with Chub.
Family was at the heart of Ruby’s world. She was nurturing, motherly, and deeply family oriented. Her strong will was matched only by her love for her family and Newfoundland roots. She took great pride in her appearance even getting her hair done the day before she was hospitalized.
She is survived by her children; Gary, Sandra (Karl), Terry (Lynn) and Judy. Son in law Jimmy. Grandchildren; Shauna (Adam), Elizabeth (Cade), Andrea (Eugene), Jennifer (Wayne), Jessica (Steven), Kristina, Angela (Jerry), Amanda (Ryan), Nadara (Neil), and Leanne (Joey). Great grandchildren; Evan, Matthew, Jaden, Jailyn, Jake, Olivia, Maria Rosa, and Logan. Sister Hazel, and brother Wilfred (Fan).
She is predeceased by her husband Gerald (Chub), parents Jessie and Phillip Lemoine, daughter Geraldine, daughter in law Maureen, sisters Bethina (Jack), Virginia (Cecil) and brothers Nathan (Joyce) Kenneth (Mabel), and Gerald.
Her legacy is one of resilience, tradition, and love—a beacon to all who had the privilege of knowing her. Ruby will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched.
Cremation has taken place, a visitation and memorial service for both Ruby and Chub will be held at TJ Tracey Cremation & Burial Specialist, 370 Reserve St. Glace Bay on Monday, July 28, 2025, beginning at 10 a.m.
Interment will take place at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date.
The family would like to thank the VON, especially Nancy and Rachel. You were her special angels. Also, staff at the Wound Clinic at the C. B. Regional Hospital and a special thanks to Dr. Stephanie Elleker. Your kindness did not go unnoticed.
“She sings a song of hope and cheer, there’s no more pain, no more fear. You’ll see her in the clouds above, hear her whisper words of love..”
