Lucille (Lucy) Anne MacKenzie Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of Lucy MacKenzie at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on June 28, 2025. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and treasured friend.

Born in Belle Cote, Cape Breton, Lucy was the daughter of the late Julia Anne (LeBlanc) Arsenault and Hubert Arsenault. Surviving is her husband, Greg, daughter, Heather (Eric) Meinke (Colorado), son Mark (British Columbia), siblings, Gabe Arsenault (Massachusetts), Donna Arsenault (Belle Cote), Jean MacDonald (Margaree), and Phyllis (Jackie) MacPhail, Belle Cote. Her fondest joy were her three grandchildren, Avery Meinke, Russell Meinke and Olive MacKenzie.

In addition to her parents, Lucy was predeceased by her brother-in-law Warren MacDonald.

Lucy graduated from Margaree Forks High School in 1966 and then attended the Nova Scotia Institute of Technology. She furthered her studies at Saint Martha’s Hospital where she graduated in 1968 as a Registered Technologist. She went on to work at the Pathology Institute, Halifax and then St Rita Hospital and Cape Breton Regional Hospital from where she retired in 2003.

Lucy was a dedicated and active member of her community. She was a volunteer with the Catholic Women’s League and a breakfast program volunteer for youth at Shipyard Elementary School. She also volunteered her time and support to serve at the Cape Breton Cancer Center.

Lucy loved the experience of travel and visited several countries in Europe, often sharing her experiences with close friends who came along. Frequent visits were made to visit her children and grandchildren in the USA and western Canada.

She was an avid card player. Lucy knew the secret to winning at “Tarbish” was to pick the best partner and she had an ace player in her husband and best friend of 54 years, Greg.

Lucy was a wonderful and creative cook who could turn random ingredients from her fridge into a delicious meal for friends and family. She was a founding member of a five-couple gourmet supper club which met monthly for a period of over 35 years to enjoy culinary experiences and lots of laughter.

Lucy was a member of Ski Atlantic Seniors Club which took her to ski hills around Canada and the USA. She took up golfing later in life and played golf courses around Cape Breton and Atlantic Canada with her many friends.

Retirement motivated Lucy to try many different things for fun and enjoyment. She lived her life to the fullest with no time to waste. She took painting classes, yoga sessions, quilting and loved a good book.

Our family is heartbroken, and she will forever live on in our hearts.
