It is with sadness we announce the passing of Russell Stanley Nickerson, age 77, of Williamswood, Nova Scotia, on May 12, 2025, at the QEII Victoria General Hospital.

Born in Halifax, Russell was the son of the late Stanley and Rebecca (Marriott) Nickerson and husband of the late Marie (Pike) Nickerson.

He spent most of his life in the Harrietsfield, Williamswood, and Sambro communities, where his easy-going personality and quick wit made him a familiar presence. Known for his love of conversation and his knack for storytelling, Russell seemed to know everyone along the Sambro Loop—and always had a bit of “news” to share.

A plumber by trade, Russell was a proud member of the United Association for over 30 years. Even after retirement, he continued doing small jobs, to stay active and connected. When not working, he could often be found at his beloved camp on Ragged Lake—affectionately dubbed “Shangri-lai”—where he enjoyed time with his fiancée, Miriam, and friends.

He is survived by his fiancée Miriam Butler; his children, Christal of Woodinville, WA, Kevin of Halifax, Heather (late Nicholas Olsen) of Halifax; sister Marion (late Lauren Matley) of Sun City, AZ; and cousin Bernice (Doug) Kidston.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to all who supported Russell, especially during the final year of his life. Your kindness and assistance—both big and small—meant the world to him. Special gratitude goes to the compassionate nurses of the palliative care teams at home and at the QEII Victoria General Hospital.

In accordance with Russell’s wishes, there will be no funeral. A Celebration of Life will be held on June 7th from 1–3 p.m. at the Ketch Harbour Area Community Hall, where friends and family are invited to gather, share memories, and honour a life well lived.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Nature Trust.
