I struggle to find the right words to share the passing of my hero. My Papa was everything to me, and trying to sum up who he was and what he meant in just words feels impossible. But if there’s one thing I know, it’s that I’ve been his girl from the very beginning.
Papa was my rock. He was steady, reliable, and always just a phone call away. Whether I needed help, advice, or just wanted to talk, he was there. He was my first call whenever something exciting happened because no one was prouder of me than he was.
He taught me that love is found in the little things- a bowl of fruit already cut and waiting for me in the morning, chats on the veranda with country music in the background, Florida golf cart rides, and real belly laughs. He showed me what it meant to be patient, and to fix things properly. My grandfather could fix anything, and often made it better than before. He took his time because he cared about getting things just right.
He loved his cars and he loved golf. I didn’t exactly share those passions, but that didn’t stop us from finding our own ways to connect. If Papa thought something was good enough, that was all the convincing I needed- which is how I ended up with the same car as him. He taught me the importance of keeping a car clean and taking care of the things we love. When I started learning how to change my own tires, I’d send him pictures. He got such a kick out of it, proud as ever.
Growing up, I believed there was nothing he couldn’t do. And even as a teenager, I loved hearing him navigate our 'tech support' calls.
He was the definition of someone who loved what they did. He found joy in his work and in helping others. He could connect with anyone, anywhere. He had this warmth about him, like being around sunshine. You just felt better when he was there.
What I wouldn’t give for one more hug, to hear “I love you, babes,” or to be called Papa’s girl again.
Some of my best memories are with him. And though my heart aches, I’ll carry those memories with me always-because they’re reminders of a love that was steady and strong.
