On Friday, May 9th, Karl Francis Marshall, 76, fought his last championship battle, surrounded by his loving family after a short stay at Cape Breton Hospice. He was the son of the late Hayward Douglas and Margaretha Marshall.
Karl was born, raised, and lived for many years in Whitney Pier. He worked for 30 years at Sydney Steel Corporation as a heavy-duty mechanic in both the mobile department and the blast furnace. He could fix anything—and if he couldn’t, you might as well throw it out.
In addition to his work at the steel plant, Karl had a side hustle as a DJ. Many Cape Breton residents have fond memories of dancing the night away to his masterful mixes at weddings and community dances. Beyond music, Karl was a dedicated martial artist, spending 35 years training at Carabin’s TaeKwonDo and earning his 5th-degree black belt. In the summer he found joy playing baseball, while the colder months were spent hunting and fishing with his close friend, Dan Gallaway, and cheering for his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs.
Karl is survived by his wife of 55 years, Judy (Ramsay)—the love of his life—as well as his two daughters, Karla (Mike) Paquette and Nikki (Piyush) Marshall-Verma. He is also survived by his brothers, Gordon (Julie) and Donald (Barbara); sisters, Helen (the late Robert) McGrady and Connie (Allan) MacLennan; grandchildren Eric (Fayth Pamser) and Hayley (Tirian Mafuala) Paquette; great-granddaughter, Arabella Paquette; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased his brother Douglas.
Karl’s quick wit and sarcastic sense of humour endeared him to everyone he met.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the team at the Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton and the staff at Cape Breton Hospice, especially nurses, Vicky McMullin, Melissa Hennick, Dr. George Burns, and Dr. Anne Frances D’Intino, as well as Dr. Conrad Oja and the caring staff at the Cape Breton Regional Cancer Center.
Thank you to all the friends and family who offered food and support during this time, especially Carol & Paul Wall, Lynda & Richard Munroe, and Dan Gallaway.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 6 Churchill Drive, Sydney, NS 902-539-7175. A Celebration of Karl’s Life will be held on Thursday, May 15th, 2025, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Polish Village Hall, 954 Victoria Road, Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County/Cape Breton Hospice or the Tom McNeil Patient Care Fund.
