John Horace Walter Ching Obituary

John Horace Walter Ching, 70 of Bedford fell asleep 30 April 2025 at home. Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, he was the son of Jean and Walter Ching.

John was born in Christchurch New Zealand in 1954 where he spent his early years with his dad Wally and mum Jean. In 1966 the family moved to Wellington New Zealand to support family members. After school he worked as a retirement and plan administrator and various insurance roles with different insurance companies. Prior to retiring due to ill health John worked for Manulife Insurance for a few years as an office clerk. He had 2 siblings David and Margaret and was able to visit them in New Zealand and Australia in 2014 and delighted in the fact that he was so blessed to rebond and grow in love with them.

He emigrated to Nova Scotia in 2003 to marry his first wife Tina and Elizabeth their daughter was born in 2004. Sadly Tina fell asleep in 2005. Elizabeth was the light of his life. Sair and John met in 2009 and as Elizabeth announced the 3 of them got married in 2011.

John was a phenomenal dad, incredible husband, loyal friend and brother and a massive model railway enthusiast. He was fun to be around and an endless joker. For those of you who know him well you will know he loved his coloured socks and bright shirts. Nature was another love of his; feeding the squirrels who sat on his lap and blue jays too and there was always an apple or potato for the deer. These last 2 years were spent watching the birds feed and announcing each breed as they arrived at the feeders. One of his carers called him the modern-day snow white!

A patient and humble man, devoted to following Christ, dedicating his life to sharing his faith in God wherever he went including missionary work in Fiji and the Solomon Islands. His faith shone through in every day life.

John/Dad we carry you in our hearts daily. We will stay strong, full of the love we shared, smile, open our eyes, love and go on making memories to tell you about when we meet again as we promised. Even so come Lord Jesus.

John is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, Sair Ching; daughter, Elizabeth Ching (Billy, who John embraced as family); sister Margaret Diepenheim; granddog, Kiki Ching, his four-legged friend. And many families and friends from the UK and New Zealand.

John is predeceased by Jean and Walter Ching (parents); Tina Ching (1st wife); David Diepenheim (brother).

Family flowers only, memorial donations may be made to the family to help with expenses in the last five years of his cancer journey, email: mrswhizzes@hotmail.com
