Theophane 'Theo' Joseph Musial Obituary

Theophane “Theo” Joseph Musial

Gardiner Mines/Westmount, N.S.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and brother, Theophane “Theo” Joseph Musial. Theo was born on February 18th, 1958, to the late George and Mary (Hurley) Musial.

Left to mourn are his wife Leona, sons Kyle (Megan) and Mathew (Lori), stepchildren Cody Bellefontaine, Sam Williams (Tim), and grandchildren Jenacee, Kayden, Ella, Lakin, Allison, and Bryson. Sisters, Frances Bresson, Rita Brown (Eddie), Mary Alice MacMillan (Walter), Georgie Mackie (Cecil), and brother Jimmy Musial (Sue); mother of his sons Elaine O’Handley; father-in-law Leo Bellefontaine; sisters-in-law Linda Baskin (Harvey) and Lori-Ann Bellefontaine (Doug); also left to mourn are many nieces, nephews and best friend Reggie Slaunwhite.

The son of a miner and the youngest of six kids, Theo eventually grew up to be like everyone’s big brother. Theo fulfilled his dream of working in the coal mine like his father and brother in 1980, where he continued until the mines closed in 2001. During his tenure in the mine, Theo became part of Mine Rescue, something of which he was immensely proud. Upon closure of the mine, Theo moved on to Marine Atlantic, where he continued to work until he retired in 2018. This past summer, Theo enjoyed giving tours at the Miners Museum, telling all the stories of his time working underground. An electrician by trade, Theo was a jack of all trades to everyone who knew him. Theo was known for his quick wit and dry sense of humor; he was always trying to make everyone around him smile and laugh. He was an avid outdoorsman and could always be found in the woods on his ATV, hunting, fishing, or cutting wood.

Besides his parents, Theo was predeceased by brother-in-law Ralph Bresson and nephew Chris Musial.

As per his wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 9-11 a.m., and a Celebration of Life to follow at 11 a.m., with Fr. Norman MacPhee presiding, all in T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay, N.S. 902-849-4199.

Words of remembrance may be forwarded to Theo’s family by visiting www.tjtracey.com.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the CBRH Foundation for mental health initiatives.

“Though you’re no longer with us, your spirit lives on in the laughter, love, and cherished memories we hold dear.”
