Robert John Garland, born 20th June 1945, passed away 24th April 2025.

Beloved husband to Brenda, father to Duncan, father-in-law to Melissa, stepfather to Miranda and Alistair Duncan, grandfather to Evan and step-grandfather to Danielle, Samantha, Michael, Charles, Eddie and Frank, and step-great grandfather to Max, Leo, Tilly, Elizabeth, Harry, Barnaby and Gus. Cousin to John, and friend to many.

Born in Eton (UK) but always a Canadian. Lived in Toronto in the late 1970s / early 1980s, and then in Nova Scotia with his wife Brenda from 2004, originally in Chester and then moved to Halifax in 2017. Son of Herbert and Joan Garland of Newfoundland, who lived and worked in London after his appointment to the Newfoundland High Commission office in the UK. Herb was a proud ‘Newfoundlander’ (not a Canadian) as his appointment was made prior to the Confederation between the Island of Newfoundland and Canada in 1949.

Robert enjoyed dual citizenship, both Canadian and British, as a result of those circumstances.

Educated at King’s College in Devon, and Ryerson University in Toronto, Robert worked much of his career as a small business advisor, both in the UK and Canada.

Loyal member of the Royal Commonwealth Society, passionate model train enthusiast, and never far from a Tim Hortons.

Robert will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
