Douglas Earl Spence (Doug), 80, of Halifax, NS, passed away April 9, 2025 at the Halifax Infirmary.

Born in Campbellton, NB, he was the son of Muriel (Walker) and Earl Spence.

Survived by his wife of 41 years, Joan Spence (Connolly), son, Garett Spence (Spouse - Joanne LoRusso-Spence); daughter, Koren Spence (Spouse - Keith Sheppard); brother, Jack Spence; and grandchild, Josh Sheppard.

Doug was predeceased by parents, (Muriel and Earl Spence); and sister, (Nancy Spence).

Doug enjoyed a decades-long career in banking and finance. His spare time included volunteer work with the very first Terry Fox Run, various National Briers, Memorial Cup and World Junior hockey tournaments. He also enjoyed traveling with Joan to France, Portugal, Singapore, Thailand, and Mexico. In his later years, he attended a weekly morning breakfast group with a great group of friends.

Doug was a multi-sport athlete. While playing intermediate baseball, he threw a no-hitter the day Pierre Trudeau was elected. He also excelled at hockey, basketball and curling. Highlights as a long-time member of the Mayflower Curling Club included an eight-ender and representing Nova Scotia at the 1999 Canadian Senior Men's Championship. In his later years, he was an avid member of the Halifax Wanderers lawn bowling club. He also once hit a hole-in-one.

On top of all of those things, Doug was a loving husband and father, a doting grandfather, loyal friend and a genuinely kind and compassionate person. He will be remembered, and greatly missed, for his underrated wit, his easy-going nature, and his ability to make everyone he met feel respected and valued.
