June 8, 1950 – April 3, 2025 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael Richard Ellis on April 3, 2025, at Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Born on June 8, 1950, in Toronto, Ontario, Michael was the beloved son of Marjorie (Harfield) Reid of Toronto and the late John Ellis. Michael was a graduate of Humber College of Applied Arts and Technology, where he completed a diploma in Computer Programming in 1972. He began his professional career with NCR, holding various roles that reflected his adaptability and keen interest in technology. Later, he relocated with his family to Nova Scotia, where he continued to work in a number of positions until his retirement in 2020. For Michael, the true joy of any job was the people he met along the way. Known for his warm heart and easy conversation, he had a genuine gift for connecting with others. A lifelong lover of mystery novels, politics, and world affairs, Michael was never far from a newspaper or a good book. His passion for automobiles and motorsport—especially Formula Racing and NASCAR—was a constant throughout his life. He made it a point to attend races whenever possible. Road trips around Nova Scotia and annual visits to Ontario to see family and friends were among his favorite pastimes. Michael cherished the simple pleasures of life—meals shared with friends, a game of cards, and lively conversations. During the quiet months of the COVID-19 pandemic, he kept close ties with his mother, calling her daily to chat about politics and their beloved Blue Jays. Michael is survived by his partner and the love of his life, Heather Leahey of Bedford; his mother, Marjorie Reid (Toronto); sons David (Dartmouth) and Robert (Pugwash); his brother Chris (Toronto); and stepbrother Paul Reid. He also leaves behind his nieces, Leahanne (Dan) of Aurora and Lesley (Chuck) of Flesherton, and their children. Michael will also be deeply missed by Heather’s family: Shawn, Brittany, Blake, Matthew, Ellina, Elias, and James, as well as his sister-in-law Martha, brother-in-law Charlie, and mother-in-law Betty Blackmore. He was predeceased by his father, John Ellis; his first wife, Sally (Johnson); and his stepfather, Ed Reid. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. Michael’s kindness, curiosity, and unwavering love for those around him will be remembered always.
