Obituary of Arthur (Artie) Lawrence Fougere
Please share a memory of Arthur (Artie) to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Fougere, Arthur (Artie) Lawrence, age 75 died on April 8, 2025 after a brief illness with cancer. Born in Glace Bay on March 9, 1950, he was the son of the late John Henry and Emily Ann (Burke) Fougere of River Bourgeois, Cape Breton.
Except for a few years living in Aurora, Ontario, Artie lived all his life in River Bourgeois. In his younger years, he was employed with Nova Scotia Forestry cutting pulpwood and also worked on the roads with the Department of Highways.
Artie enjoyed listening to old country music, a good feed of smelts or mackerel, a burger with the works from A&W, and cousin Dolores’s homemade soup which she kindly made for him. When in the right mood, Artie was ready to make people laugh, many times at their own expense. He loved reminiscing of years gone by and telling us funny stories. He had nicknames for family members and others alike (which won’t be mentioned here). The girls at Foodland and MacDonnell Pharmacy in St. Peter’s were subjected to his sense of humour. He enjoyed visiting with the boys and “making laughs” at Georgie’s Garage and Brent’s Autobody Shop. He had many conversations with his buddies where he lived at the Riverview Senior’s Complex in River Bourgeois namely Mark Feltmate, Blair MacRae and Chris Sampson. Special mention to Gregory Owens who Artie shared many phone calls with and to Chuck Burke who was always ready to take Artie to various appointments while he didn’t have a vehicle.
Artie leaves behind his brother, Lester (Cynthia) Sampsonville, sister, Isabelle (Doug Tanner), Halifax; nieces, Rikki, Candace, Chelsey, Rachel, Diana and nephew, Kean; great-nephews, Isaac, Johnathan, Benjamin, Brooks, Boston, Quade and great-niece, Rebekah.
Special thank you to Dr. Nerika Maharaj and nurses in ICU, Cathy MacGillivray, Social Worker, and nurses in the Palliative Care Unit at Saint Martha’s Hospital who went above and beyond taking such great care of Artie. We can’t thank them enough for all their support.
As Artie requested, there will be no visitation or funeral and burial will be at a later date.
