
Obituary of Gerard Daniel McNamara

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gerard Daniel McNamara, 87, of Westmount, Nova Scotia, on March 9, 2025, at The Northside Guest Home, surrounded by his family. Born on December 11, 1937, in Antigonish, NS, he was the son of the late Alfreda (LeVangie) and Daniel McNamara of Lower River Inhabitants.
For more that 45 years, Gerard worked in the grocery sector as an employee of Sobeys, Co-op Grocery and Macleod & Son Wholesale. He earned the respect and friendship of colleagues and customers through unrelenting hard work, a great sense of humour and loyalty to his community.
Gerard was known as a lifelong and devoted volunteer with many organizations. He especially enjoyed his involvement in politics with the Liberal Party, Spanish River Community Centre, Holy Rosary Parish, and his recognized work with the United Commercial Travelers (UCT). Gerard was known for his generosity, kindness and uplifting presence and always putting others first.
Gerard will be remembered not just for the roles he filled, but for the heart and soul he put into his life, friendships and family. His family is forever grateful for the friendship and support he received from his auto mechanic buddies Reg Deveau and Jack Obrien (late).
His passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, he is truly one of a kind.
Gerard is deeply missed by his loving wife of 65 years, Alice (Riggs); their children, Steven (Kelly), Kamloops, BC, Robert (Laura), Moncton, NB, Ed (Colette), Dartmouth, NS, and Alyson, Asheboro, NC; his son-in-law, Terry (surviving spouse of his late daughter Teresa, Westmount, NS); and siblings, Frank (Ellen), Monica (Joe), Jean (late Ferd), North Sydney, NS, Luella (late Duncan), Brantford, ON, and Fred (late Hazel), Port Hawkesbury, NS. Also remembered by Wreatha, surviving spouse of his late brother Bernard, Salisbury, NB.
Gerard is also survived by his grandchildren, Ryan of Kamloops, BC, Jeremy of Westmount, NS; Kelsey and Jordan of Halifax, NS., along with his great grandchildren Loghan and Andey of Kamloops, BC.
Gerard was predeceased by his daughter, Teresa, Westmount, NS, brothers, Manning, Stewiacke, NS, and Bernard, Salisbury, NB and sister, Bernice.

Cremation has taken place under the care of T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, Sydney, NS, 6 Churchill Drive, Sydney, NS, 902-539-7175. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, March 14 from 5:00 – 8:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Rosary Parish, 40 Rosary Drive, Westmount, on Saturday, March 15th at 11 am, Fr. Douglas Murphy officiating, with refreshments to follow at the Westside Legion Branch 126, 99 Midgeley Drive, Westmount.
