Obituary of Mary Rowena Kane

Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
The family of Mary Rowena Kane sadly announces her passing on February 26, 2025, at Melville Lodge Nursing Home in Halifax, NS. She was ninety-five years old. Mary was born in Dipper Harbour, NB, on August 4, 1929, the sixth child of Ernest and Lillian (Belding) Thompson. Passing before her in 2002 was her husband and our wonderful father, Harold Edward Kane and in 2013 their son and our brother Colin Paul Kane; her sisters, Willena Broderson and Edith Baines; brothers, Willard Thompson, Christy Thompson, and Harley Thompson. Mary was an artistic, independent and energetic woman who loved her family and spent her life devoted to her husband, children and grandchildren. She always had a very creative flair and had many hobbies and interests. She knit sweaters for grandchildren, made them quilts, took art lessons from some well known artists, and she produced many oil paintings that her children still cherish. She was always active in her church: singing in choirs, teaching Sunday School, leading CGIT groups as well as cooking for church social events. In her later years, she took up skating and bought a bicycle at the age of sixty-five which she drove around Dartmouth for exercise. She loved to go to Dipper Harbour with Dad and us children to stay in ‘the camp’ on vacation. She continued to drive there from Halifax until she was seventy years old and even after Dad had passed away. Mom was always outspoken, had a feisty nature and it remained with her until she took her last breath. We loved her for that and some of us adopted a few of those traits. She loved her family and spent her life devoted to us by having us for wonderful meals and celebrations on holidays and birthdays. Left to remember her is her brother, Eric (Bev) Thompson; her daughter Rowena (John) Cole, her sons Timothy (Ruth) Kane and Martin (Kim) Kane. Mom also leaves grandchildren; Jordan , Mary, Cara, Paul, Sarah, Brandon, Christopher, Jeremy, Jonathan, Lilly and Mallory, as well as great grandchildren: Hunter, Connor, Olivia, Graydon, Lincoln, Rylan, Arlis, Eli, Grace, Harriet, Julie, Asha, Barry, Jaxon and Elaina. She also has many nephews and nieces who have kept in touch and have been very kind to her over the years. She will always be remembered for her energy, love of nature, her spirit, her creativity and love of old gospel hymns. In her final few minutes of life, Martin sang her a few of her favourites. Tim and I would like to thank Martin for his almost daily visits to see Mom in our absence. He was the highlight of her days, bringing her coffee and chatting with her. Not only was he her company, but he kept his promise to our father when he passed that he would look after Mom. We are very grateful to him for that. A memorial and interment will take place in late spring in Saint John.
