"It is with a heavy heart to announce the passing of James Harland Somers, “Junior” who passed away peacefully at rest at home in Halifax on January 22, 2025 at 68.
The son of James and Betty (Wright) Somers, James was one of a kind, and his heart was big for those around him. James’ belief in God was steadfast. He was a great singer, dancer, friend, loyal and a very compassionate person. He was always one to help others. He was a proud member of the Carpenters Union, Royal Canadian Legion br.27 and was proud of his lifelong connection to his home community of Beechville NS.
James enjoyed being busy. He was not one to just sit around any length of time, always finding a reason to get up and go. He was a true go getter and worked very hard and always found ways to improve. If he had to go halfway around the world to work and provide he would. In fact, he did just that. James took his work and his jobs seriously. Not one to shy away from a job or challenge, there weren’t many skillsets he didn’t possess. He could build a home from the from the basement to the roof, frame it, wrap it, wire it, plum it, finish it and even craft some furnishings. He was hands on man and as a perfectionist, he took great pride in his workmanship. And at the end of the day, prepare some of the finest meals you’d ever have. Quality and reliability were everything.
If not busy with work, then it was time with friends and family. James enjoyed the people in his life and being social, with a particular embrace for family and friends. Maintaining relationships with friends and family and community was important. He enjoyed visiting people especially with his son in tow and eventually finding a desire to travel.
Above all else, rising to challenges and responsibility of being a single parent, James was a proud father who demonstrated strength and resilience at every stage in his life and parting wisdom, resourcefulness but most importantly, integrity and morality to his son, his pride and joy.
Despite his strength, complex health issues posed significant increasing challenges and discomfort in the latter few years of his life. Being the man of his generation, he wouldn’t show it. He just pressed forward. But the time as come to be released of the human body and all its insufferability, reach out to God’s extended hand and go on home, throw of the shackles of worldly thoughts and finally be at peace.
Survived by son Joshua Kennedy (Né Jonathan); brother, Eugene (Donna); sisters, Lydia, Theresa, Rolita, Sheena (Vincent), Roberta; uncle, Stan (Susan, aunt Virginia); and several Nephews and nieces.
He is predeceased by brothers, Richard and Robert “Bobby”; sister, Betty Mae “Darlene”; nephews, Scott and Robert; uncle, Leslie; aunts, Scelonia, Jean and Maude.
