Obituary of Frederick William Hawryluk

We are saddened to announce the death of Frederick William Hawryluk, 93, on Wednesday, January 29, 2025. Born in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Fred was the son of the late Antonia and William Hawryluk. At a very young age, Fred and his family moved from Thunder Bay and made their life in Whitney Pier. At the age of 20, Fred joined the Merchant Navy, which took him to many places overseas. He would tell numerous stories of when he was in England. Recently he was telling stories about how he never had homemade fries like he had in England until just lately. Anyone who knew Fred knew his passion for food. After returning from overseas, he was employed by Scotia Wholesale. He later opened a dairy on the Green Road, and he was also the owner of Fred’s Bottle Exchange. He was always thinking of ways to make money and to be self-reliant. Fred was a unique man and a hard worker all his life. Fred’s family were his pride and his treasures. He is survived by his son, Brent, (Kathy) who he resided with and who was by his side when he passed; daughter, Kendra (the apple of his eye) MacKinnon (Joe), Edmonton; grandchildren, Amber (Dan) Henschel, Darren (MaryAnn) Axworthy, Chelsea (Cameron); and great-grandchildren, Silas and Ellery Henschel; Theo and Toby, and Hunter and Caleb. Besides his parents, Fred was predeceased by his wife, Anna MacGillivary; brother, Johnny; sister, Annie; and his son, Fred Jr. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care and direction of T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 6 Churchill Drive, Sydney, NS, 902-539-7175. There will be no service. The family would like to thank the Cape Breton Regional Police, EHS and the nurses on the 2nd floor of the New Waterford Hospital, where Fred was a recent patient. Also special thanks to Tom Kelloway, who came to his assistance, and Blaise Hollahan, who was the best neighbor and friend to Fred. “Dad you were one of a kind, and we will forever love you.” Kendra, Brent and Family
