Ernest (Russell) Poirier of Halifax, NS passed away surrounded by his family and friends Wednesday, Dec 9th at Victoria General Hospital after a short but courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Cheticamp March 15, 1948, he was the son of the late Joseph Poirier and Rosie (Arsenault).
Survived by his loving and devoted wife of 45 years Sharon (Cathcart) and sons Todd (Renee) and Brad. Brothers Frank, Donnie, Roger (Sherry) and sister Veronica Walker. Grandchildren Ryan Morrison, Christian, Gavin, and Kaelan and many nieces/nephews.
Predeceased by his sister Carol, brother Stanley and sister-in-law Audrey.
Russell was employed at the Irving Halifax Shipyard as a Welding supervisor for many years and was respected by all. Russell spent many of hours in the hockey rink supporting his boys
which lead him to take on the responsibility of VP of the HMHA. He continued his passion for hockey through his grandchildren and never lost hope supporting the Maple Leafs with his ritualistic hockey game viewing on Saturday nights. Russell also was the President of the Chebucto Minor Baseball Association.
Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will take place (with reception to follow) at St. Michael’s church, Herring Cove Rd. Spryfield. on Tuesday, December 15th 11:00am. Donations came be made in lieu of flowers to the Canadian Cancer Society or to Autism NS.
